Paper of the Year 2015

My paper of the year is the one by Baran who published a monumental piece of work discussing the conversion of one steroid into another in a linear synthesis of about 20 or so steps and 0.5% overall yield:-

steroid01

This particular steroid is known for its cardiac stimulation and was first isolated in the late 19th century form the roots of an African tree as its corresponding glycoside the aglycone  being isolated by Mannich.

I assume you all have read it by now. For me it stands out as a tremendous piece of work with lots of chemistry to learn.

To all I wish a happy new year.
